Clifton 9 vs GlideRide Max: The Soft-Ride Showdown
Where it all started
As a young runner two years in, I’ve been obsessed with HOKA since day one. I’ve burned through multiple pairs of Clifton 9s, loving every second. As my latest pair wore down, I stopped by my local shop to finally get a professional fit.
Lo and behold, they landed on the ASICS GlideRide Max. Hesitant to step outside my HOKA box, I decided to try them out.
Let me just say… I haven’t been disappointed.

-
Choose Clifton 9 if you want a lighter, do-everything daily running shoe that feels easy and natural.
-
Choose GlideRide Max if you want maximum softness and a stronger “rocking chair” roll for easy and long runs.
Pro's and Con's
The HOKA Clifton 9s are an awesome all-around shoe for basic running. They’re easy to run in, do most things well, and can act as a one-shoe quiver if you only want one pair at a time.
That versatility is also where the drawbacks show up. This shoe is definitely not the softest option if you prefer max cushion, and it won’t give you much extra push on longer runs.
The GlideRide Max is a couch-for-your-feet—in a good way. It smooths out your stride and takes the sting out of long miles, so you can go farther (and sometimes faster) without wrecking your legs.
That said, it’s a long-run specialist. If your week includes track reps or tempo work, you’ll likely prefer the nimbleness of the Clifton 9.
Personal Experience
The HOKA Clifton 9s are the shoes that introduced me to running, and that’s exactly where they thrive. They let me consistently try new kinds of training—from speed workouts to long runs. Comfortable and simple, they can handle almost anything.
The old adage fits: “Jack of all trades, master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.” That’s the Clifton 9.
The ASICS GlideRide Max has been a pleasant surprise. The noticeable increase in plush cushioning and the stronger forward roll make it feel like I’m being gently propelled—by a pillow. It really helps on longer runs, keeping me moving strong as I get tired.
One key difference I’ve noticed is the secure heel on the HOKA Clifton 9. When I first ran in the ASICS GlideRide Max, I worried I’d bought the wrong size, but it was really a design difference. The GlideRide Max leans into a roomy, comfort fit, while the Clifton 9 focuses on a locked-in heel with an average midfoot.

Which Should You Choose?
Starting fresh or coming back after a break? The Clifton 9 is the no-drama choice—light, friendly, and good at almost everything. Craving comfort or stacking long easy miles? The GlideRide Max is your couch-on-cruise control. If your week includes a little speed, Clifton stays lively; if it ends with tired legs, GlideRide keeps you rolling. And if you want to get fancy, run Clifton Monday–Friday and save GlideRide for long-run Sunday.
Ask Yourself These 3 Questions:
1. Do I want one shoe for everything? If yes → Clifton 9.
2. Do my legs feel beat up on longer runs or after hard days? If yes → GlideRide Max for extra cushion and an easy forward roll.
3. Do I like a shoe I barely notice? If yes → Clifton 9. If you prefer “comfort couch” underfoot → GlideRide Max.
Big picture: you’re choosing between two winners. ASICS has the heritage and dialed-in comfort; HOKA keeps pushing the category with light, friendly rides. Try them on, trust what feels right, and run with it.
